Frontiers of the Roman Empire (Antonine Wall) World Heritage Sites Supplementary Guidance

What do we want to know?:

The Council is continuing its programme of producing Supplementary Guidance in association with the Glasgow City Development Plan (adopted March 2017). Supplementary Guidance offers more detailed guidance and expands upon existing policies and proposals contained in the Plan.

The Frontiers of the Roman Empire (Antonine Wall) World Heritage Sites Supplementary Guidance was prepared jointly in 2010 by the five local authorities who cover the area of the Antonine Wall (West Dunbartonshire Council, East Dunbartonshire Council, Glasgow City Council, North Lanarkshire Council, and Falkirk Council). An updated version of the SG, prepared jointly in July 2022 by the same five Councils and Historic Environment Scotland, is now out for consultation. This SG will support all local development plan policies relating to the World Heritage Site, in particular Policy CDP 9 - Historic Environment.

This revised SG, which is in the process of being adopted separately by each local authority, involves minor changes to the 2010 Supplementary Guidance to improve clarity and understanding. Once adopted, the document will form part of each Council’s Local Development Plan.

Anyone can comment on this draft Supplementary Guidance, but the consultation may be particularly relevant to people who are involved in development matters in and around the World Heritage Site such as housing and commercial developers and individual householders. Other interested parties may include local interest groups who support the work of the local authorities and Historic Environment Scotland.
