What do we want to know?:

What is Glasgow Avenues Plus?

In addition to the Avenues Programme, Glasgow City Council has successfully secured Transport Scotland funding via Sustrans  (Places for Everyone) to deliver additional Avenues  - including Duke Street and John Knox Street

  • The Avenues Plus project is a £21.4m multi-year project to make walking, wheeling and cycling more attractive.
  • This project seeks to link the city centre with adjacent communities, promoting active travel and increasing connectivity.

Objectives of the Project

To reshape the city centre to protect and prioritise space for active travel, improve connectivity, introduce sustainable green infrastructure and improve public transport accommodation. Specific improvements will include:

  • Green/blue infrastructure (such as street trees, planting and Rain Gardens)
  • Enhanced and widened footways
  • Single surface crossing points
  • Segregated cycle lanes
  • Reduced street clutter

Improved lighting features

Places for Everyone  Design Principles

  • Develop ideas collaboratively and in partnership with communities.
  • Facilitate independent walking, cycling, and wheeling for everyone, including an unaccompanied 12-year-old.
  • Design places that provide enjoyment, comfort and protection.
  • Ensure access for all and equality of opportunity in public space.
  • Ensure all proposals are developed in a way that is context specific and evidence-led.

Reallocate road space, and restrict motor traffic permeability to prioritise people walking, cycling and wheeling over private motor vehicles.
