No-one should need to suffer the indignity of urinating in public because there are no toilet facilities. Standing against a residential wall or crouching behind a car is undignified and not the sort of behaviour one expects in a civilised society.
While there might be no legal requirement for Glasgow City Council to provide public toilets, just as the Council provides rubbish bins, it has a moral obligation to provide toilets for our human waste and to ensure the health of citizens and the public and environmental health of our city.
Our parks and public places are busy because of the good weather, the need to exercise and the joy of being outdoors. Sadly our enjoyment of the outdoors is spoilt if there are no public conveniences.
This petition calls on the Council to liaise with its Arms Length External Organisations and other public bodies, such as ScotRail, to:
• liaise with Community Councils and other community groups to determine the desired opening hours and locations of public toilets.
• use innovative solutions, given the lack of public funding, to provide toilet facilities
• consider the use of temporary portaloos, the construction of Paris-type “pissoirs”, which at least give some privacy, the introduction of community cafes and pubs which allow members of the public to use their facilities, among other possibilities
• ensure that public buildings, such as libraries and museums allow members of the public in to use the facilities.
• Importantly, ensure that all public toilets are very clearly advertised and signposted
In summary, no-one should be subjected to the indignity of urinating in public and no-one should be subjected to seeing public urination as they look out of their home or enjoy our city.
I have written to my 4 councillors and heard back from 2. I have submitted an environmental complaint on the council website and spoken to the Council Officer who responded to it.
